Resources for Autism & Sensory

Items and resources I use to improve the lives of students, teachers, and parents.

Focus on what is right

I give a copy of this to every parent of a child with autism in my private practice. Trying to get the district to by a bunch.

Like wearing a hug. These calm children

There are several versions and sizes to choose from, but when all else fails these have worked. The weight calms behavior and some are stylish.

Writing on vertical surface

Used for students who write better on a vertical surface. Helps with many writing disorders. The teachers often demonstrate on a vertical whiteboard. Improved writing for a student with dyslexia.

Embrace it

We do not have “autistic students.” We have students with autism. A fun throw for the office.

Excellent resource

Provides lesson plans for counseling students with behaviors from:

  • Trauma

  • ADHD

  • Autism

  • Depression

  • Conduct Disorder

I often reference this when writing behavior support plans.

Help them explain their feelings

Every psychologist and counseling office should have this poster and use it regularly.

Guided social skills lessons

Do not wing it. When providing social skills training use a proven technique. This walks parents, psychologists, and therapist through well thought out lessons building social skills in children with autism.

Oral sensory input

Have a student constantly chewing his/her shirt? Cannot chew gum? Chew on Chewlry. These are my favorite for elementary school boys, but there are several different styles.
